Operation Get Fit: Getting Started

Hi All!

I've been reading along with Sarah of Venus Trapped In Mars and her Operation Get Fit posts. Did you all know home girl is down 12 pounds. I think that is so fantastic!

Now I'm sure some of you will look at pictures of me on the blog, and thing...umm Whitney? You? You're trying to lose weight?

Well yes and no. I don't really have an issue with my weight. I have an issue with my fitness level. I am the worst kind of skinny. I am 'skinny-fat'. My clothes still fit, for the most part, but they are getting a little uncomfortable. I still look slender, but things are wobbling and jiggling all over the place where they never used to. Even Boomer has been kind enough to point out my wobbly bits.

Thanks kid.

My issue is the getting started. I pin all these great bodies on pinterest, and I reblog all these amazing fit women on tumblr...but how do I get there.

I know I eat a lot of crap, but on the flip side of that, I'm allergic to a crazy amount of fruits and some veggies. I also just really love bread guys. And fried things. And cheese.

I also have access to a gym at my complex, as well as at my job... I just have no clue where to start!!!

I mean I can hop onto the elliptical at work for 30 minutes of my lunch...but what is that really going to improve if I want to get a really toned body. I know I need to lift, but how much and how????? I really just want a trainer to yell at me and tell me what to do.

This is turning into a ramble.

Well this week I'm going to try and start small. I'm going grocery shopping and I'll buy the fruits I KNOW I'm not allergic too and work on some breakfast smoothies and snacks for work. (Mid afternoon snacks are killer for me.) I'm also going to work on packing lunch everyday so I'm not tempted by the yummy offerings at the work cafeteria. I will also try the elliptical a few days this week....I mean. I have to start somewhere right?

I definitely think the elliptical is a good workout, they are definitely difficult! Good luck!

That's a great place to start. Just moving a little bit a day helps. Even though your fruit and veggie intake is limited try mixing in ones you don't really like into a smoothie.

You gotta find something you enjoy. If someone told me I had to do the elliptical id smack them across the face, I'm not doing that. But I will do group classes, and I enjoy them! What if you did Pilates DVDs or something like that with the elliptical? That would for sure tone things up! Try YouTube too, there are tons of
Fun workouts on there!! And tell boomer that she needs to shush, she'll understand when she's older :)

Group classes are definitely what keeps me motivated!! When I do the treadmill or the elliptical, I can tell I'm slacking off. But I love classes and they push me for a solid hour.

But yay! Gotta start somewhere- good for you girl.

I love the elliptical, that is my fav cardio workout, and as for weights just start small, may not seem like you are doing much but every little bit helps, lord you can use cans in your home and do some arm curls and it will start te process for you.

oh, yay; my FAV topic!!!

in my opinion, cardio and lifting is what you need to do.

cardio improves your heart muscle which therefore improves your cardio endurance; lifting builds lean muscle mass that helps torch calories while at rest. so i do both so that i'm fit all around.

lifting: start out light. if you have never lifted before, start with 3lbs. don't tell me to get the hell out of your face because trust me, lifting 3lbs ONCE or twice is nothing but lift this in a circuit for 3 minutes straight? DEATH. look into jillian michaels 30 day shred or ripped in 30. i like ripped in 30 better -- these are two good programs for beginners that will condition your muscles so that you can build on them. they are 30 minute workouts (circuit training) based on the 3-2-1 foundation: 3mins lifting, 2 mins cardio, 1 min abs.

cardio - anything that elevates your heart and keeps it elevated for at least 30 minutes. so running, elliptical, bike, spinning - whatever you fancy. alternate lifting and cardio every other day.

in my personal opinion, i love HIIT programs like insanity/asylum, T25, TapOut XT etc. machines are boring to me so i love the dynamic nature of HIIT programs.

the important thing is to what you love to stick with it.

let me know if you have any questions; i would be happy to help out!

starting small is better than not starting at all :)

Getting started is the hardest part - if you don't know what to do, try experimenting with classes and see what works best for your body and your schedule. We're all different! And DRINK THAT WATER (as I chug) :)

Listen to Kathy from Vodka & Soda! Have you seen her bod? Holy schneikies, girl looks amaze balls!!

I think you have ato start somewhere, and just any kind of exercise is a good start. I think cardio would be a good way to build your endurance up, get that heart used to pumping faster, and your muscles used to more blood rushing to them!

You're beautiful, but it is ALWAYS good to better ourselves! (as I sit here with Oreo's and coffee!)
